Silk Fusion Landscapes Workshop By Shawn Delker

Class Description: Join us on Sat April 28, 2018 from 9:30am - 4:00pm. Escape for a while and enter the world of using silk fusion to create one of kind landscapes.  The use of handmade silk fusion allows the artist to create a design reminiscent of watercolors.  Shawn Delker will demonstrate her technique for making silk fusion from silk roving and then lead you into making your own landscape using both silk and batik fabrics. Shawn will teach how to use free motion quilting to create details of the landscape. Students should already be comfortable with Free Motion Quilting (see separate Free Motion class offered to prepare, if needed). Class Kit is required which provides the student materials needed to accomplish an 8x10 design. Silk fusion landscape kit includes base fabric, batting, backing fabric, fusible web, silk, and batik scraps. Includes $45 registration fee and $40 required supply fee per student, Light Lunch will be Served

Supplies Student provides:
-Sewing machine in good working order with an embroidery foot, and a way to drop or bypass the feed dogs
-Fabric scraps (preferably batiks) for more choices.
-Embroidery thread (or regular cotton/poly, I just like the shine of embroidery thread) in various colors and particularly black
-Iron and press board if you have a portable one (if not, pressing stations will be provided)
-Scissors, small snipping size and shears (available for purchase)
-Teflon pressing sheet (available for purchase)
-Extra sewing machine needles (top stitch size 80’s work well) (available for purchase)
-Gloves with gripper fingers for quilting (available for purchase)

About the Artist: Shawn Delker, Quilt Artist of Bent Twig Quilts, has explored many techniques and studied under several nationally know art quilters. Her favorite techniques use her own handmade silk fusion and her hand-dyed silks. “I love the way silk naturally glows and the bright colors it will absorb,” says Shawn. She is a member of SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Association), EDGE (a Midwest art quilt group), and two casual art quilter groups in Kansas.

Two of her quilts have been juried into galleries; she has exhibited at many area art venues, including the Rolling Hills Zoo Plien Aire event. She was the Artist In Residence at the Red Barn Studio in Lindsborg, Kansas for three weeks in 2017, and she received the third place award for medium size art quilts at the Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta in 2017. However, she is particularly proud of her acceptance into the demonstration area at the Smoky Hill River Festival in Salina, where she demonstrated her love of quilting for the past two summers and will be returning again this June.

Shawn loves teaching others about art and art quilting and is always willing to share her knowledge and passion at presentations and workshops. Learn more about Shawn’s art at her website, www.benttwigquilts.com
